I’m proud to share with you: Way of the Rakshasa, the sequel to my first book, Born to Be King.
It’s a long overdue sequel, so I thank you for your patience. But the reason I took so much time is that I tried a lot of new storytelling techniques with this book. This book has flashbacks, multiple points of view and timelines, and lots more.
For those who’ve already read Book One, I hope you will enjoy coming back to your old favorite characters. For those starting your journey today, I really envy you. You’ll be able to spend twice as much time with these guys as the rest of us did when the first book came out.
Tolstoy believed that art was a means of communicating emotion. If there is no feeling, then there is no art.
Growing up, I was the constant outsider. I’d travelled across the country, moved through six different cities and studied at nine different schools. I was always the shy new transfer student. Some places, I was mocked for my strange accent. In other places, I didn’t relate to the culture.
Over time, I realised that I was not unique in this. We all feel out of place sometimes. We’re all at the intersection of myriad identities and constant conflict of loyalties but desperate to fit in. And sometimes, it can be a burden. But it is also liberating. Our uniqueness, the one thing that makes us outsiders, can be our strength too. And it manifests itself when we are surrounded by people who love us not despite what we are but because of it.
It’s a universal feeling, and with globalization and immigration, it’s a feeling that’s bound to grow. But it’s a feeling that we don’t see represented in stories often. Way of the Rakshasa is about a lot of things, but primarily it’s about this feeling. The need to give back to the world that will never truly accept you. I hope I have conveyed it to the best of my ability and I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the matter.
That you’ve showered the first two books with so much love and appreciation is the reason I had the motivation and energy to finish the third. I hope your support has been duly rewarded with this book as well. Thanks again dear reader for sticking with me through this wild and exciting journey. See you in the next book.
