Do you actually love writing? Let’s find out.

Hey there, it’s Deepak Thomas. I write cool science fiction and fantasy stories inspired by Indian culture and history. But let me tell you, not long ago, I was unsure if writing was my thing for the long haul. I had some doubts and questions about whether I was truly passionate about it or just doing it for the wrong reasons. Maybe you’re feeling the same way?

If that’s the case, let me share some tips that helped me figure out the real deal about my writing. Maybe they can help you too, to see if writing is something you truly want to do or just for fun.

Are you writing for the wrong reasons?

The first thing I learned is that you need to take a moment and think about why you’re writing in the first place.

A lot of folks write hoping to become famous or super rich. But guess what? Being a famous writer isn’t that common. Can you even recognize most writers if you saw them on the street? I bet not. Even the best-selling authors aren’t always recognizable to everyone. So, if you’re in it for the fame, writing might not be the right path for you.

And about the money? Well, most books don’t sell a lot, which means most writers don’t make tons of money. Yup, it’s a tough reality. Making a living from writing is possible, but if money is your main goal, maybe you should think about starting a business or getting a job that pays better.

Does writing fit into your ideal life?

Another thing that helped me was envisioning my ideal life. You can try this too. Imagine what your regular day would look like. Where would you live? What would you wear? What kind of job would you have? Think about it, does writing play a big role in your ideal day? If not, maybe writing isn’t your long-term thing.

You can also make a list or draw a picture of what your ideal life would be like. Don’t worry about impressing anyone, just be honest with yourself. If you dream of driving a Lamborghini, write it down. Don’t worry about sounding fancy for others. Be true to you!

Have you tried other forms of storytelling?

I also realized that writing isn’t the only way to tell stories. There are tons of other cool ways like making videos, doing comedy, or writing rap lyrics. You can try different things and see what feels right for you. I tried a bunch of stuff too, but I found my real joy in writing books and comics.

Do you keep coming back to writing?

Being consistent with writing is super important too. If you always find yourself coming back to writing, even if you take breaks, it might mean you truly love it. For me, writing has been a part of my life since I was a little kid. It’s like a friend I always go back to, no matter what’s happening in my life.

How do you handle feedback?

One more thing to think about is how you handle feedback. Some people give up on their writing dreams when they get negative feedback. But if you truly love writing, feedback won’t stop you. I know it’s tough when your book doesn’t become a bestseller, but if that’s enough to make you stop writing, maybe you’re not in it for the right reasons.

Conclusion

To sum it up, I don’t want to discourage you from writing. My goal is to inspire you to write. It’s not an easy journey, but it’s worth it if you truly love it. So keep writing, and don’t let anything bring you down. If you’re passionate about something, you’ll find your way.
